Hamline University Hosts the 2010 Minnesota Gubernatorial Debate

October 12, 2010

Tescia Veldhouse, '11, asks the candidates what they will do to make college more affordable for students.

This past Saturday, October 9th, Hamline hosted the 2010 Minnesota Governor’s Gubernatorial Debate, in large part due to Hamline Univeristy professor, David Schultz, and his ties to Fox 9. Hamline University students were given the special opportunity to attend the debate and ask questions to the candidates, receiving the seats directly behind the debate media panel which consisted of the following critical political reporters: Jeff Goldberg of FOX 9, Rachel Stassen-Berger of the Star Tribune, and Bill Salisbury of the Pioneer Press. The candidates for this year’s governor race consist of Republican candidate, Tom Emmer, Independent candidate, Tom Horner, and Democratic candidate, Mark Dayton, who stood in that order, respectively, on stage in the Kay Fredericks Ballroom. The debate consisted of 5 sections, 1) “The Hot Button,” 2) “Big Issues,” 3) “Social Issues,” 4) “Student Questions,” and 5) “The Final Sell,”  in which, for the first four sections, candidates were given 1 minute to respond and then another 30 seconds for a follow-up. For the 5th section they were given two minutes to do their “final sell” to the public. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the debate, and I will say that it was definitely an awesome experience – what a great opporunity for myself, other students, and for Hamline University.

Get out and vote on November 2nd!

Until next time,

Mikaela 🙂
